Encourage A Young Writer

Today is Encourage a Young Writer Day! I love teaching writing, especially using the workshop method. Honoring students' ideas and interests as valid topics for writing validates their ability to be real writers.

Here is the cover of a book I wrote in second grade!  I was so proud to have my work "published."  I have kept this book all these years because it exemplifies to me the power of a teacher who encourages students by valuing their work.  This is no great writing sample, but empowering me as a writer by binding my work has stuck with me and encouraged me to continue writing.

How do you teach writing?

  1. That's so cool that your second grade teacher was such an inspiration - I read your "about me" bit too! Do they know?

    1. Hi Serena,
Thank you for your comment! I am so fortunate to have met up with my second grade teacher to show her how she impacted my life. Unfortunately, my grandparents passed away before I graduated with my teaching degree, but I would say they knew I would fulfill that dream because I never waivered from my decision to be a teacher. My grandparents' teacher items are some of my most treasured possessions! (Not that I can use the old chalkboard eraser in my classroom! Teaching has changed so much since their days.)

  2. I read some of your old posts after commenting and saw that about your grandparents too- that's really awesome!
Thanks for letting me know my signature didn't work- I'd deleted an equals sign!

    Hopefully this one does :)

    1. Simply offering the opportunity and place for students to share gives them validity. Kids also love to read each other's work!
